About IKES
Indian Knoll Elementary opened its doors for the first time on August 1, 2011 with an enrollment of approximately 900 Kindergarten through Sixth grade students. It was built to accommodate new students in the rapidly growing community of Canton, Georgia, which is located in Cherokee County, one of the fastest growing counties in the state. The school was built to house approximately 1,250 students.
The beginning of Indian Knoll School can be traced back to the 1890’s, with Indian Knoll School included on the 1895 map of Cherokee County. The original school was located near the intersection of Highway 140 and Avery Road and included two buildings. Indian Knoll was later relocated to a site behind Indian Knoll Baptist Church, and then included three rooms. Indian Knoll School was eventually consolidated with Hickory Flat School in the late 1950’s.
Indian Knoll Elementary School is now in its eleventh school year, and currently houses Kindergarten through 5th Grade. The school continues to offer a variety of programs, including Special Education Resource and Inclusion services, Early Intervention Program services, Remedial Education services, ESOL services and Gifted services. There are currently 87 identified gifted students in grades one through five representing approximately 9.6 percent of our total school enrollment. Furthermore, we have 29 1st grade talent development students. Indian Knoll offers an Early Intervention Program (EIP) in Kindergarten through fifth grade for students who perform below the 25th percentile in Reading and/or Math, providing a smaller classroom teacher to pupil ratio and specialized instruction. Many eligible students are offered free after school tutoring opportunities throughout the school year through our EXP Program.
Indian Knoll offers a variety of extra-curricular activities to upper grade students. Fifth grade students have the opportunity to participate in the IKES News Team, Safety Patrol, Flag Patrol, Jr. Beta Club, 4-H club, Friends Club, Techno Wizards, Academic Bowl, Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, Science Olympiad Team, Jr. Optimist Club, and Chorus.
Indian Knoll provides a wealth of instructional strategies and programs focusing on Depth of Knowledge teaching practices, incorporating higher level thinking and problem solving skills into the curriculum to increase student achievement across all content areas. Instructional programs and best practices are a priority among all grade levels through the incorporation of RCD units which involves writing across all disciplines. Students also have access to iReady Math, Do the Math, Number Talks, SOLO, Fundations/Wilson Reading, Raz Kids, and Reading A to Z, among other specialized instructional programs.
